About
The artist Vígdis Petersen Hoegagard has regularly through her professional life, which consists of very varied artistic activities, returned to a minimalist style where she concentrates on the exploration of pure form. These ´minimalist stages` the artist herself describes as an attempt to reset the mind, purify the mind and open up for new movements, but nevertheless it is during these periods that her major works were created.
In the 1990s she worked with the series ‘Kvæðabrot´ (pieces of old ballads), which consists of a number of ceramic cube forms and in recent years, she has worked with the work series ´Lumina`. ´Lumina` is created in raw burned stoneware and shaped as open boxes. The strict minimalism that characterizes this form, however, is broken by the varied play of the beam inside the sculpture. At the top of the sculpture is a piece taken away so the light is allowed to penetrate, and to make room for this light invasion Vígdis Petersen Hoegagard gives also room to have the pure form broken. She allows chance play into the managed and that the complex will have room in the simple and the mystical enters the minimalist style. Vígdis Petersen Hoegagard´s work ´Lumina` shows us in this a new idea we might not immediately associate with minimalism. It shows us that minimalism has anything other than basic geometric shapes, and anonymous materials and minimalist works that are not necessarily empty of internal content.
For even though the sculptures are composed of simple shapes or elements, which is repeated in modules, as we know it from minimalism, so even the rigorous will be alive in Vígdis Petersen Hoegagard´s hands and the architectural will be more organic than mechanical. At the same time the artist herself is a part of the series, and the minimalist principle that the artist’s presence in power must be minimized broken or reinterpreted. Vígdis Petersen offers not only space for an interplay between the raw and delicate, between heaviness and lightness and substance between equality and immaterial, she also opens up a personal dimension to the seemingly tight and simple, and she opens up the possibility of content and importance of a minimalist work of art.
